The challenge.
The supply of performance doors and ironmongery to a large £842 million healthcare development at South Glasgow Hospital's campus. Avanti Architects devised various strategies for the building such as locking, fire rating, door protection and finish strategies. The specification requirements included the supply and install of 7,500 doorsets and fully integrated ironmongery.

The solution.

High quality doorsets for a gold standard hospital

The recently completed 2015 South Glasgow Hospitals Campus will house maternity, children’s and adult acute hospitals as well as a cutting edge laboratory, which opened in 2012 with Leaderflush Shapland supplying an additional 816 doorsets. The Govan site will also boast the biggest critical care complex in Scotland and one of the country’s largest emergency departments.

Brookfield Multiplex is working on the adult and children’s hospitals which will provide 1109 and 256-bedded facilities respectively and together form the largest single NHS build project in Scotland. Leaderflush Shapland has worked closely with Brookfield and the architects to ensure the right performance doorset solutions are specified, which is critical in a health setting where a variety of considerations need to be addressed.

Project Manager Martin Muirhead explains: “The architects devised various strategies for the buildings, such as a locking, fire rating, door protection and finish strategies. We considered all of these before advising which doorsets were best for each application. In this case we selected Plasform and Designer doorsets – including our American White Oak veneer and Stanley Oak veneer effect PVC which provide robust protection in corridor situations – alongside our EcoGuard frame-to-wall seal.”

Plasform is particularly suited to health settings since its rounded post-formed edges minimise the build-up of airborne particles and can be easily wiped or washed clean. In addition Leaderflush Shapland anti-bacterial additive, Hygienilac, is integrated into all the doorset veneers to provide life-long protection against the spread of infections. Hygienilac kills 99.9% of bacteria including MRSA, listeria, clostridium difficile and salmonella, which is a vital characteristic for hospital doorsets.

Leaderflush Shapland supplied ironmongery to the hospital including door closers, mortice locks, lever handles, digital locks and ancillaries. The anti-ligature ironmongery supplied to the Children’s unit of the hospital has rounded designs to ensure ligature points are reduced and the design is sympathetic with the surrounding environment. Electromagnetic hold open door closers ensures the doors stay open all day during visitor hours, in the event of a fire the closer works in conjunction with the smoke detection system to operate the integral hydraulic closer.

Balancing observational needs with privacy was also an important consideration during the specification process since every patient on a general ward in the adult hospital will have his or her own en-suite single room. The children’s hospital, meanwhile, will consist of four-bedded and single-bedded accommodation.

“Leaderflush Shapland  consistently delivered on the supply and installation of integrated performance doorsets to the-state-of-the-art Southern General Hospital in Glasgow over the past few years.
Brookfield Mulitplex worked closely with Leaderflush Shapland  to ensure the right performance doorset solutions and ironmongery were specified on the project, which is critical in a healthcare setting where a variety of considerations need to be addressed. Leaderflush Shapland’s experience and efficient production techniques ensured that deadlines were met and high quality products were correctly installed. The combined effort meant that positive relationships were established throughout the duration of the project and exceptional levels of service were achieved” explains Alasdair Fernie, Project Director from Brookfield Multiplex.

With this in mind Leaderflush Shapland’s Visicom and Highline products were specified. Visicom is a dual purpose, easy to operate vision panel that turns an open-to-view area into a private area and vice versa. Highline is a fully adjustable blind encapsulated in glass that is incorporated into a door to offer several viewing options.
To ensure fire resistance standards are met Leaderflush Shapland supplied up to FD 60 fire rated doorsets to the building. In addition Leaderflush Shapland’s EcoGuard product has been installed, offering further protection.

“EcoGuard is a wedge-shaped easy-to-install seal that is applied in the gap between the frame and the wall. It generates much less mess than intumescent mastic, which is important in a hospital setting, and provides fully certified fire protection for up to 60 minutes, making it an effective solution in high-risk fire areas. The use of this seal leads to improved productivity for installers allowing for a speedier installation process and also removes any concern regarding whether the appropriate amount of intumescent mastic has been applied” says Muirhead.

On such a large project specifying the right products is only part of the job, delivering them on time and in good condition to ensure building schedules aren’t delayed is also key. LeaderflushShapland combines long experience and a tradition of craftsmanship with the most efficient production techniques to ensure that even the largest, fast-track projects can be handled effectively.

“Brookfield devised a programme and we are working within that to avoid other works being held up. We have divided the project into 244 areas and follow an agreed schedule in each area, bringing the doors on site the week before they are due to be fitted. Brookfield trust we can hit deadlines alongside providing high quality products that are correctly fitted,” adds Muirhead.

Once complete the South Glasgow Hospitals Campus will provide a gold standard of healthcare, likewise during the build process Leaderflush Shapland seeks to provide a gold standard service.
